$32. After the discount, the buyer is paying 75% of the list price. Algebraically, $24 = 0.75 L, where L is the list price. This is easily solved.

The book was sold on 25% discount which means that the guy got at 75% of the actual selling price so this is a simple case of cross multiplication.Let me show you the calculation:

75% = 24$
100% = ?
Therefore 100*24/75
= 2400/75
= 32$
so the magazine without 25% discount would be 32$.

The original cost of the magazine is $32.
Since 24 is the discounted price and forms 75% of the actual price. Just divide 24 by 3 then multiply the answer by 4.

Dude , when you divide something by 25%, that means your dividing it by four. 1/4=25%;2/4=50%;3/4=75% and 4/4 or 1= to 100%.
If the discount is 25%, then you are removing 1/4th part of your cover price. that means that 24 dollars is 3/4 of the cover price.
24/3 = 8. ;
24 (which is 3/4 or 75%) + 8 (which is 1/4 or 25%) equals 32 bucks.

25% is 1/4 , so $24 = 3/4 * C

8= 1/4 * c
32 = C
magazine cost is $32

Everyone else is basically right; I'll just show you how I would reason it.

A "discount" means you're taking away some of the full price. So if P is the price, then [1P - .25P] means "the full price" minus "a percentage of the full price."

Then you get:
1P - .25P = $24
.75P = $24
P = 24/.75 = 32

In general, once you get an answer, go back and think about if it makes sense. If the magazine on sale was $24, then you know the original price was more (who goes to a sale that jacks the price up?!). If you had gotten a number smaller than $24, then you know it would be wrong.

let x= original price
x-25%=24
24= 75%
24+25% of x= x
24 multiplied by 1/3= 8 because 24= 75% and 1/3 of 75% is 25%, so 100% divided by 25% is 4
and 8 multiplied by 4= 32(x)
Pretty complicated ha? In Philippine Science High school we do it like that.

cost of magazine = x
amount given = 75% of x (because 25%discount) = 24$
75/100 x = 24$
x=24$*100/75
x=32$

Thirty two bucks. What magazine costs THAT much?

Oh, I took 24 and divided by three and then added the result. 24 / 3 = 8/ 24+8=32.

24/.75=32 you are paying 75% of the price, divide what you are paying by the real number of the %, it will give you the total.( you can substitue 3/4 for .75)
or you could divide 24 by 3 get 8 and multiply that by 4 and get 32
