I have been considering brick or pavers but everyone says they should be installed by a pro but I think if I hire someone with a bobcat to dig, lay gravel base then tamp sand it is a doable project for a senior citizen

Well in reality, nothing is going to be easy. I forgot to say Hi! Hi! Now laying brick or paving slabs involves a good deal of physical labor, but in terms of technique it's no more difficult then putting tile up on a wall. Paving Slabs need to be put down on a firm level base, but the depth and substance of that base depends on what your going to be using it for, and what type of soil you have to put it on. For just plain walkways and patios, remove all the grass from that area along with the dirt to allow for the thickness of your pavers and add an extra 11/2 inch for a layer of sharp sand, and another 3/4 inch so it will be below the rest of the grass and you won't run over it with your lawn mower. Compact your soil down with a garden roller, then you 'll need to spread the sand around using a rake and finally tamp and level it with a piece of 2x6 wood. Now if your going to use it to support a heavier load, you need to put down a sub-base of gravel or crushed rock 3 or 4 inches deep before the sand. That needs to be firmly compacted of course. I hope this helps you out, if your anywhere in the heat, maybe you should wait until it is cooler outside . I wouldn't want anyone getting heatstroke,or worse. Take care,Bye

I say go for it, get someone to prepare base for you and then lay the bricks/pavers
You dont have to have it done today so take your time and have fun then you can say "I did this"
If anyone doesnt like it just tell them to shut the gate on the way out

It IS doable. Cement is not hard to do either and in some ways is easier. Why not continue the cement?
