I live in a dorm room 8'5" by 11' The unit has no over head light, only a desk light. A friend said that when redoing her house they were required to have overhead lights in rooms that were a certain size. I was wondering if my room is against code.

Call the county court house, ask for the building codes office and speak with them. What one person says isn't always true. You might be opening up a Pandora's box, make sure you have a place to move to before making complaints, they may not be taken to lightly.

You should have a switched receptacle in the room connected to a light switch near the door. That complies with the code so no overhead light is required. Homes are the same way. Plug a lamp into the switched receptacle.

I can't see having any room that doesn't have overhead lighting. It will depend on the building codes to where you live. If it is a older place it will probably be grandfathered in. If it is, the only way they will have to upgrade is if they do a remodeling job. At that time they will have to apply to all building codes. Sorry

may depend on where you live.. however, i know where i live that when you have NEW construction you are required to have certain things, but existing structures can stay as they are unless you so choose to change them.
example- my mom had a section of her house redone- they were required to have a smoke detector in each bedroom if they were in fact bedrooms, however- the third bedroom in the house that was still part of the house- not newly rebuilt didnt have one and wasnt required to have one
also ithink that dorms are a lil different than a house.. it is a different sort of dwelling and the room size may have something to do with it also

no. it is not against housing code. you dont have to have overhead lights. many homes are built without overhead lights. they were designed for lamps.
