1100=20x+1850-50x
1100=-30x+1850
1100-1850=-30x+1850-1850
-750=-30x

the way i figured it out was to start out with all 20s. This amout is 37 x 20 =740.
the difference between 1100-740=360.
the difference between 50 and 20 is 30.
if you take the 360 you still need to get and divide by 30 (50-20)=12.
That means you need to make 12 of the bills 50s, and that leaves 25 bills that are 20s
12 x 50=600
25 x 20=500
600+500=1100

let f be the number of fifty dollar bills and t be the number of 20 dollar bills.
Then:
f+t =37 this is the equation for the total number of bills
50f + 20t = 1100 this is the equation for the money
solve by substitution:
t = 37 -f
50f + 20(37-f) = 1100
50f +740 -20f = 1100
30f = 360
f =12
t = 37-12=25
