This is a good question.
I don't understand why they have 1-AA teams playing with the likes of Michigan anyways.
It's similar to the Nashville Sounds (Minor league baseball team) playing the St. Louis Cardinals.

Because it's called a contract every game that is played has a contract! So in this case for Appalachian State was paid 400,000 dollars for the game as stipulated in the contract. Every college football game is under contract.

It's paid to the visiting school out of a fund and done by many big schools to pay a small schools expenses to visit .
Yes, win or lose they get paid. The guy that said it's in a contract is correct. All college games are scheduled with a contract.

They took home 400,000 grand because thats how much Michigan payed them to travel to Ann Arbor to take a "*** whipping."
See there is really no reason for these D-1AA schools like Western Kentucky or Montana State to come in and play a powerhouse school like Michigan, Florida, or Louisville; who will spank their teams 77-3 and demoralize their football teams; especially when these smaller schools have to pay money to travel to these big time colleges.
So when big D-1 schools wish to schedule smaller schools they offer loads and loads of money for them to come in and get beat up and tossed around by the first-second-and third string. Unfortunetally for Michigan they chose to pick a fight with the wrong dogs who chewed them a new one, ruinied their national title hopes, embarassed them in front of the nation, and probably got their coach fired.

Uh...Yeah...They went to Michigan because Michigan thought they were scheduling a cupcake sure-win game...oops...
And just like any other game, the visiting team gets paid a certain amount for the game...

Lots of games are sponsored that the schools athletic fund or general scholarship fund gets money for the win. This game's purse was 400000.
