Reseting my ipod is not working?

I have a 30 Gb Video iPod, in itunes I click the 'restore' button, but it says to check my network connections, but the ipod and internet, everything is properly connected. I try manually resetting the iPod, but after it goes to the apple screen, I get it to turn on and it still has all of my play lists, songs, even the on the go list (which I thought my ipod deleted by itself the other day).....

why not try re-initializing it first by wiping it clean using your disk utility program. then go ahead and re-install the ipod software.
