Put all the x's together on the left and the nominal on the right side of the equivalent sign.

5x + 8 = x - 2
5x - x = -2 -8
4x = -10
x = -10/4 = -5/2

5x+8=x-2

think of an equation as having two parts (numbers and letters with numbers) our goal is to sort the two numbers alone on one side and letters with numbers to the other.

to move the +8 to the right side (to be with its partner the 2) we flip its sign whenever it, or any quantity for that matter, goes across the = sign.

5x = x - 2 - 8

now the x geos to the left and its implied + sign which iss not shown turns into a -

5x - x = -2 -8
4x = -10
divide both sides by 4 to get

x = -10/4 = -5/2

St 1: 5x-x=4x (right side)
St 2: -2-8=-10 (left side)
St 3: -10/4 (simplify, that is) [-(2)(5)/(2)(2)], the 2's from the top and the bottom cancel out, leaving, -5/2.

First, you subtract 8 from both sides.

ie. 5x+8 (-8) = x-2 (-8)

>> 5x = x-10

Second, you subtract the x from the right side. (or you could say that you bring the x from the right side to the left side).

ie. 5x-(x) = -10

>> 4x = -10

Now, you divide both sides by 4 to get the value of x.

ie. (4x)/4 = (-10)/4

>> x =-5/2

Take away x and add 2 to both sides. That gives 4x+10=0. So 4x must equal -10 so x must be -5/2.
