yeah, i grew up there, now i just live a couple hours away. but i visit often. (im writing about kansas city missouri, not kansas city kansas. i dont go to kansas very much =/ )

kc is really fun, its not the biggest city, but not the smallest either. most citys are based around "downtown" but kc is different downtown is alittle run down but there are a couple of cool art galleries and awesome restraunts downt there.

a couple of other cool parts are westport, the plaza, independence, blue springs, and lees summit.

westport is kind of the "hipster" place to hang out theres lots of bars and coffee shops as well as cool stores and tattoo parlors. lots of culture there, i would def. recommend going there.

the plaza is right near westport and around there are alot of restraunts and nice stores aswell as a move theater. they call kansas city "the city of fountians" the plaza is the place to see them all.

independence blue springs and lees summit are kind of like suburbs theres lots of shopping and fun things to do around there, indepence has cool crest which is a mini golf place as well as salvators which is a wonderful itialian restraunt.
independence also has a pretty nice mall "independence center"

some other cool things--

we have an awesome amusment park called worlds of fun, it has a 200 foot roller coaster called "the mamba" and a new roller coaster which lets your feet dangle.
next to worlds of fun is oceans of fun which is their version of a water park. very fun.

we also have a very big zoo. in swope park (near the plaza)

and if your a sports fan we have the royals and chiefs stadiums together off of i70

theres always something to do in kc.
but becareful there are some pretty bad neighborhoods in the old part of kc, i wouldnt recommend going there.

dont forget to try gates bbq. or any bbq for that matter!
hope i could help
good luck

There are a lot of good answers to this question already - I'll just add some observations and trivia. I live in midtown Kansas City, Missouri. There are some bad areas, but most of the places of interest aren't bad at all crime-wise. I have read our drinking water is rated very highly (for whatever that's worth). There is an area in Kansas City called the "Plaza" that features Spanish architecture and European artwork. It is decorated with Christmas lights which are turned on in a large ceremony every Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November) - see first link below.

Near the river, there is an area where goods are sold year-round in open markets.

We have football (American) and baseball stadiums, a couple large convention centers and another stadium under construction.

There used to be a very nice movie theater on the Kansas side called the "Glenwood" - it was torn down this century but set the world record for "Star Wars" earning a million dollars in its first year of release (that was the first theater where I saw that movie and waited in a line that went around the block).

The summers can be extremely hot, especially in August and September and we usually reach temperatures in the 90s and 100s (F) with high humidity. Winters can get bitterly cold, particularly in late December, January and February. We don't get as much precipitation as we used to. Spring and fall are extremely pleasant, though we always get tornadoes in the spring.

Kansas City is famous for its barbecue and jazz music and President Harry S Truman came from the east side.

The Kansas side of the city is home to a lot of technology businesses and Cerner Corp. lives on the Missouri side.

Cost of living is reasonable and if you know which areas to avoid, crime isn't a problem.

We have a bus system and a light rail system is in development - see second link below.

Kansas City is two cities and a metropolitan area situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. The Combined Statistical Area also includes the Micropolitan Statistical Areas of Atchison, Kansas, and Warrensburg, Missouri, with estimated populations of 16,745 and 50,646, respectively. The Combined Statistical Area of Kansas City had a population of 2,034,796 in the year 2006. In 2007, Worldwide ERC and Primary Relocation recognised Kansas City 3rd overall as one of the "Best Cities for Relocating Families" in the United States. Kansas, was rated 13th and Lee's Summit, Missouri, 44th best. Kansas City is one of 2 metro areas to have 2 cities in the top 15.

I live there :). Kansas City Mo is somewhat dangerous. Though you will find lots of interesting and even nice people here. Independence Center is an ok mall (it has a carousel inside) and one really good mexican restaurant you can go to is called Los Tules (which is in downtown MO) The stadium is fun to visit and the zoo is pretty good as well.
hope this helped :)

KC is like any city out there--there's good and there's bad. How you perceive it really depends on what you take for granted and what you consider to be important.
