So I know this is the pregnancy category, but this seemed like the best place to post this. I've been taking the depo provera shot now for I think about 5 years, with no problem, but I hear that it takes some time after you stop taking it to become fertile again. My husband and I have decided to start trying to conceive in about 1 1/2 years. Should I stop taking the shot now? If I do, what would you suggest as an alternative? (And no condoms, we hate that.)

I would reccommend that you stop getting the shot yes! And switch to birth control pills. Those will make your cycles normal again (if they arent now) and will teach your body how to do what it is supposed to again. When you are ready to try get off the pills and you should be able to get prego quickly after. This is advice my doc gave to me. Good LUck.

Yes. I was on the depo for 5 years and when I stop taking it to become pregnant it took 1 year and 3 month before we conceived. But that is not always the case I know some people who were a week late for there shot and had to take a blood test, and they were pregnant. So it is not a fool Prof plan. I am now on the nuva ring because I can not remember to take pills for the life of me. It has been working for 9 months. Sorry for any spelling or grammar errors.

the pill is the most popular choice for bc, and it can take as little as one week but sometimes up to three months for a woman to become fertile again in most cases.
Another method would be to have your doctor put in an IUD, which is just as effective but you don't have to think about it every day. Plus, it's about the same fertility recovery as the pill, I think. Most insurance companies cover the cost of one, too.
You and your husband should schedule a gyno visit (maybe the next time you'd be getting your shot?) and talk about your options. There's a wide variety of BC out there and something may be a better choice for you =)

My friend was on the shot from the time she was 16 until the time she turned 21 after that she got on the pill for about 6 mths and she messed up on her pill 1 mth and then she got pregnant that same mth. It varies w/ people. It took me 9 mths after getting off of just the pill after 2 years.

I'm on Nuvaring, have been for over 2 years. It's great! you insert it once a month, leave it in for three weeks, nothing for one week. After insurance, it's $12. My doc said I should be able to get preg right away after I stop using it. Check it out!

It depends on your body. Some women it take a day others up to a year. So it all depends on how your body is going to react to the depo.

try the nuvoring. It is monthly. Leave it in for 3 wks and take it out for ur period. They say that once you decide to concieve and take it out it takes about a month to be fertile again

talk to your gynocologist (sorry if i butchered spelling that), and you may have to get used to condoms. It's a tough question because I don't take a shot and am no where near that position you're in so thats the best I can do. Good Luck!

I had a friend that took that too, and she needed quite some time off of the shot.
Go off pretty soon
