Consumer exploitation, simply put, is taking advantage of consumers for more profit at the consumers' behest. Take this example:

A jeweller sells sub-standard or even artificial pieces at the cost of the real thing, knowing that rarely anyone can spot the difference.

Here, the jeweller makes a neat profit, but the customer is cheated as he/she has paid for the quality the item obviously does not have.

You might have heard of many institutes which offer training for Olympiads, IIT - JEE and other exams. They usually take the fee of the entire course as a lumpsum fee from the interested students just after the entrance test results are announced. If the teaching is sub-standard, and the students feel that they have paid too much, what can they do?

This, I hope made you understand.

Consumer courts are there to solve this problem. Any suspected case of exploitation can be argued in court. Mostly, the consumer gets justice. Consumer education and consumer awareness programmes help make the consumers more alert and aware of the different ways in which they can be cheated, and helps tham avoid being cheated.
