I have had the opportunity to swim with the dolphins before but it was in the daylight.

I was on a Bahamas cruise several years ago and we went to an island where they offered the opportunity to swim with the dolphins.

These were trained dolphins and they would only eat dead fish. The event took place in the beach however it was somewhat sectioned off for protection (There were Manta Rays on the ocean floor though).

There were 6 of us in the water at time and there were two dolphins - Princess and Bahama Mamma. They would swim with us and let us pet them (it felt like wet rubber but it was still quite fun!).
After about 5 - 10 minutes in the water, we got onto a pier and Princess would jump from the water onto a platform where we each got to feed her 2 fish. Then came the coolest part of all!

One at a time, we got into the water and floated on our stomach with our arms straight ahead and our feet straight behind. The trainer would blow his whistle and the dolphins came up behind us and placed their foreheads on our feet and pushed us really fast in the water. It was AWESOME!!!

The activity ended with us going to the shallow part of the beach and feeding both dolphins a total of 3 buckets of fish. It was great!

I live in San Diego and we have dolphins in the water off of our beaches. My sister once asked the life guards if it was safe t swim out to the dolphins and the life guard told her that it was very dangerous to actually approach them. The life guard said that it would be okay to get with in 100 feet of them but not any closer. If the dolphins decide to approach the swimmer, that is one thing but a swimmer should never approach a dolphin in the wild.

Another time, my sister was at the beach and she saw an incredible sight. She saw 2 surfers riding a large wave. Between the surfers were 2 dolphins who were also riding the wave. She asked one of the surfers if they were aware of the dolphins and he said that they were aware of them - and it was very disconcerting. They were not prepared to see these two, large animals suddenly show up on their wave.

Many people do not realize just how large these magnificent animals really are. They are truly wonderful, beautiful and awe-inspiring animals.

I hope that your wish comes true but I also recommend it during the day, too.

If you ever visit Sea World in San Diego, San Antonio or Orlando, bring a swim suit. You might be lucky enough to swim with the dolphins. It is a bit pricy but it is definitely accessible. http://4adventure.com/SWC/sp_dolphin_interaction_program.aspx

All the best to you!
