It is generall recommended that you wait 30 minutes after eating before you go swimming. The fact is that each person is different and some people do not need to wait as long. The purpose of the delay is to allow your body to digest your food. Otherwise there is a possibility of cramping or exhaustion accoding to the American Red Cross.

It is suggested at many pools that you should wait 30 mins after eating to go swimming. This is to let your stomach start to digest your food and have a chance to settle down. The intensity of movement while swimming can cause people to throw up in the pool if they don't wait this 30 mins....this is obviously not something that pools want (as a lifeguard I can tell you it is not a fun experience) Another reason you may want to wait 30 mins is if you have aplied sunscreen. Most sunscreen needs a certain amount of time after it is applied to actually kick in and work. Hope this helps!

THIS IS A MYTH. The Red Cross does NOT make such a recommendation. Digestion has NOTHING to do with swimming. Please stop spreading this silly story.
