Odd Xp does a very good job with wireless networking, you will probably need the driver for your particular card/chipset. Go to device manager and find out what networking devices you have and then get as much info on yours as possible and look for a driver.

Best I can do without the computer in front of me.

Sure you need an installation CD, when you purchased your unit it has accompanied in a package all your needed peripherals installation CD not with your OS installation. Better you must know what are the drivers installed on your computer that you may be able to gain back to your factory sittings laptop. Got the shop where you purchase your unit it may have some warranty or out of warranty you must know.

Happy recovering.
