1. France had no colonies on the Eastern seaboard. Their colonies only came into contact with the Gulf of Mexico. Quebec does not front on the Atlantic Ocean. You have to make a rather long trip down the Saint Lawrence River to reach the Atlantic.
2. The Dutch never lived in a republic. It's a constitutional monarchy.
3. The English were the most successful because they also inculcated their system of laws and commerce into their colonies, including those of Eastern Canada. Spain only accomplished that with Mexico and portions of what is now the American Southwest.

I agree with the Desert Viking's point number three. Looking at the results of the English colonization, they turned out to be the most successful in the long run.

I do have to take exception to his first and second points. What about the French colony of Isle Royale (now Cape Breton Island), part of what is now Nova Scotia? And the Dutch Republic existed from 1568-1795, which was their most fruitful period of colonization. Sorry, Desert Viking.

You are forgetting the Swedish Colony in Delaware.

England gobbled up the Dutch, Swedish, and most of the French Colonies and at times Spanish Florida.

So you figure out which was the most successful.
