I have comcast internet with a motorola modem and a belkin router. They have been working without problem for almost 2 years. The network shows up on the list of available networks, but it doesnt connect automatically, and when I try to connect manually, it just sits and tries to connect for several minutes and gives up. When I go unplug both and plug them back in, the laptop connects right away. Repairing the wireless card doesnt work, it disables and enables the card and still can't connect. How do I fix it?

Your wireless card is possibly defective. It isn't refreshing itself upon loss of connection signal. That's why it will connect once you unplug things. I repair computers all of the time and when I get one which is performing like yours I always go in and destroy all of the connections and setup new ones. Solves the problem MOST of the time.

I'm afraid this may be a bit technical, but I'll do my best: You do not say what models your router & laptop are - that would help! It is possible that they are both working, but not using the same wireless standard. The laptop (if a few years old) may support only '802.11B' while the router (& wanadoo adapter) may be using '802.11G'. Check the router's settings as it should be able to be set to use either only 'G' or both 'B' & 'G' together if it is fairly new. There is also '802.11N' which is very new. You have not said whether the adapter is working with the laptop or another computer? If it works in the laptop, then compare the properties of its settings with those of your built-in wireless adapter. Is there a wireless switch on the case of the laptop? Sometimes this is the same switch for both BluTooth & WiFi - check that it is on! The 'Sony Vaio VGN-SZ2XP' certainly has one like this. What I said about 802.11 standards also applies to encryption standards. There is WPA (newer, more secure) & WEP (older) - make sure that your Sony supports the WPA standard if your router is using it.

If you've been using the router for almost two years, you need to ensure that you have completed all firmware updates for the router. You may be able to check this by looking on the device, most likely on the bottom or side, and see what version of the router you're using. You may then access the web interface of the device, and it will normally display the version of firmware that is contained in the router. After verifying that, then you may access the Belkin website and search for available firmware updates for the model and version of Belkin router being used. If you notice that your router does not have the latest firmware, you may follow the manufacturers suggestion for completing this. If you are not sure what the heck I just typed, you can call Belkin with the model and version of router that you are using, and they should be able to tell you if a newer firmware version is available and instruct you on what needs to be done.

Id say that its a settings that is wrong on your laptop. If you have a WEP key that you need to enter for security reasons, then you may have to redo that. Or if you recently did microsoft updates this could be the reason for now its not working. If that doesnt work, maybe trying to restore back to a earlier date (when u knew it did work)...

Can you help me back with your opinion on my q? its a quick prob :) thanks

Your security is doing all these changes. It is better to get up and reboot/replug than to find out that you have beeen hacked. while you left your computer unattended.
