I am very isolated in my home since I am disabled and unable to drive. My doctor told me to find people online to talk to and email, but I keep finding mostly people a lot younger than I am (48) and I don't want to talk in the shorthand people use these days. The penpals sites usually give me people from far away who don't speak English very well, and the chat sites are meaningless to me. I am an educated woman who just needs some social time without the kids and perverts. Can anyone give me some leads?

I'm married and not looking for a dating site, just nice men or women to talk with. Thanks.

I wonder if you shouldnt contact some societies that come and get you from the home and take you to social situations with other like yourself...that might be an option.

Otherwise, you are probably doing the right thing by reaching out to the world online..just be careful that it doesnt extent to private info that may lead to home visitation by someone who may take advantage....I would explore the options of having volunteers who come to spend time with you or organizations that extend assistance to get you out of the home to meet people so you can interact in person...Be careful....and good luck.

Yahoo chat has been resurrected -- it's mostly bot-free these days which means that real people can chat there. There is a disable chat room, whose residents tend to be on the mature side (i.e. not snot-nosed little kids).

However, I will warn you about this and probably any other established chat room -- they tend to fall to petty bickering more than useful (or even enjoyable) chatting. The problem, I fear, is that many of the disable chat rooms tend to be come populated with people of limited cognitive abilities. That's all well and good, but it does tend to clog up the chatter with a lot of idle bickering.

Yahoo also has chatrooms catering to older groups (specific age categories for 30s, 40s, 50s, etc.). These tend to be less full of bickering.

Find an intest you'd like to chat about (oldies music, religion, sewing, whatever) and there's probably a chatroom for it.

I don't have any new sites for you, but you can email me anytime you want. I'm also disabled, but can get around and drive, yet I still don't get out much. And I don't use the typing shortcuts unless I'm chatting in Instant Messaging and in a hurry. I'm 54. Just check my profile to get my email address. Talk to you later.

The chat room at American Singles and also at Friend Finder are about the most active I know.

Online friendships (if you want to call them that) are not without their own shortcomings - people hiding behind a computer screen can be more abusive because they don't think they can be harmed back.

Hope this helps
