you need to get an agent to send manuscripts to publishers, as 9 out of 10 publishers don't accept unsolicited manuscripts.

It depends on what kind of book it is, you don't want to try to send your romance novel to a publisher who publishes mystery thrillers.

Get yourself a copy of the Writers Market 2008. It will tell you all you need to know. Actually though, you'd be better off to get an online subscription to it as it keeps the info more up to date. What's even cooler is that you can just buy one months membership to it for a couple of dollars.

Visit the library and check out the Writer's Market book. There are thousands of publishers listed, as well as their contact information. You can also purchase this book but it costs around $30. It might be worth it.

Resources vary by genre, but not knowing what genre or audeince you're writing for, my best advice is to go to the reference section of your library and check out "Writer's Market." You can also buy a copy at your local bookstore, but it's pretty pricey; better to sit at the library and make photocopies of the applicable pages.
