If - I say if - there are space-traveling people out there paying even the remotest attention to microbes such are we, we are just too insecure and undeveloped as a species. The primary evidence of that is our primitive, reactionary and aggressive belief systems - religions.

Religion can be a wonderful thing, providing hope and comfort to a person who has nothing else. For some people, it gives life a purpose, a direction, and defines morals (most religions seem to share the same basic ideas of "good" and "evil," the differences lie in the details.)
When a person is going through a difficult time (death, catastrophe, etc,) religion is sometimes the only thing he or she has.
It's a tradition that still serves its purpose.
*EDIT* By the way, I am agnostic. While I hate discrimination and violence "in the name of religion," I envy the sense of security and infinite love truly religious people feel. I have also met a few (VERY few) religious people who honestly accept and love everyone, despite their beliefs, and I have only the greatest respect for them.
On a related note, religion is more important to people in the United States than any (or most) other industrialized nation(s). I forget the specific statistic, but it can be found in Affluenza.

Because there are as many suckers in the world who seek solace from a bunch of religious zealots claiming that they were inspired by god to get your money.

We all need something that gives us a reason for existence other then we are some cosmic accident. Maybe there is still religion because it is what we need. Maybe we need it because our soul's know it is right.
I hate to think we ARE some cosmic accident because then we really don't have souls. We just stop existing. Drag.

Because people still feel the need to have an exalted reason for their existence, regardless of if that reason makes sense.
