Why is Fidel Castro influential?

He has to be influential some how. I have to do a report on him and we had to pick a person from the "influential person list" and he was on it.

People will say he's nothing more than some aging hardline Communist nut. The reality is that Castro has outlasted, to this day, 9 US presidencies and does what was necessary to remain in power. Contrary to what influential Cuban exile groups claim, Castro still has support from his subordinates and much of his own citizenry. If not, he would have been ousted from power long ago. The Castro regime, along with Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, are seen by those in Latin America as an alternative to the American hubris that has been the backbone of US foreign policy.
