My white ancestors were in Sicily and Austria up until the 1930's - 1950's, and then they moved to NYC .... they weren't abolitionists or slave owners

They could have, but I doubt it since they came over after the Civil War. Wouldn't doubt it though if it were on my mom's mother's side, my grandmother was pretty prejudice about any other race than the whites. Even on her death bed, she believed that the Confeds won.
