Why he did that is best understood from a psychiatric perspective. Vincent had an eccentric personality and unstable moods. During the last two years of his life, he suffered greatly from psychotic episodes, including epilepsy and deep depression. Basically, the great artist was mentally ill and wasn't doing too well physically either.
