My assignment is to find chemical additives in normal household products and to determine the structual and functional nature of each chemical and why the compund might be added to the product. These are the products I picked....
Toaster Pastries...Sodium Bicarbonate
Spaghettioes...Ferrous Sulfate
Marshmallows...Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate
Tylenol...Acetaminophen
Pain Relever...Naproxen
Lotion...Stearic Acid
Foundation...Iron Oxide
Hand Soap...Sodium Chloride
Stain and Odor Remover...Isoprophyl
Glass Cleaner...Ammonia
Raid...Tetramethrin

I think I did it wrong. For example, for Na4P2O7 (marshmallow) , i wrote that its used as a bufferinf agent, an emulsifier, and a thickening agent and is often used as a food additive. I think that I am supposed to say exactly what reacts with what or bonds with what to do this etc. Do you have any idea how to answer for any of the compounds i listed? I dont! PLease help!

This is a big job yu ask. You will need to use a search engine and look up each ingredient to see what function it performs. Each one is very different.

Here are some starters. In some cases you chose an additive, such as sodium chloride, which stabilizes the pH. Other additives are used as stabilizers (tetra sodium, etc.) or as colors (Iron oxide in the foundation cosmetics). Naproxen is the active ingredient in Motrin and Naprosin. Ferrous sulfate is used to add iron to the flour in the spaghetti.
Good luck with the rest of the list
