a) the guts to be able to intentionally hurt themselves
or
b) the cowardice not to tell anyone how they feel and get help

its a mixture of both a and b. its psychological as in they are afraid to talk to someone and them to mock them and it does take alot of guts to cut your wrists. so i am confident it is both a and b

neither...its about making the mental pain go away..unless you really want to understand someone and are not asking this just to put someone down or make fun of someone then don't even bother...it has nothing to do with "having the guts" or being scared to get help...unless you have ever had depression you will never know what it feels like..cutting is wrong but its a reality...and for people who cut its a way to get them back into reality..to stop the hurt, the hate, the tears, the yelling, and everything else that sucks in our lives
hope you understand and take time to listen to whomever yr asking this aboutâ¥

B it's mostly them not being able to just talk to someone about and this is coming from a person that used to cut. It doesn't take guts to hurt yourself it just takes the right amount of self hate.

its neither, my cousin used to do this until she finally told someone, me, she promised me not to tell but i had to. she was hurting herself physically because she had such strong emotions there was nothing else that could help. yes, it takes courage to take a blade and cut yourself, but it also takes courage to reach out to someone after you have done it for years and ask for help. i would not say people who cut are cowards but i wouldnt say they have guts either. i think they are people deeply hurt and the only way to feel better is to hurt themselves. its sad but true, and i hope if anyone knows someone who cuts of self mutilates will help their friend and tell someone else and get them help, or if you do it yourself, i hope you can find the strength to get help.

b.) It's a cry for help! I saw an interview with Johnny Depp, and he admitted to self mutilation, in his teens, after his parent's divorce. He said he had been carrying a lot of guilt.

Neither. When cutters cut themselves, it releases dopamine in the brain, a neurotransmitter responsible for feeling good. It has the same effect on the brain as falling in love or eating chocolate.

A little of both..but mostly leaning towards the second option..there are always more constructive ways to deal with pain..

A. Come on think about it! There is someone out there who is so troubled and has lost hope in life. Their only escape is to take a knife and watch themselves bleed. They don't have anyone to help them. If someone was there for them maybe they wouldn't be so depressed. Come on lets for once think that theirs more behind this than just taking out a blade and sliding it across your wrist.

It doesn't take guts. Guts is flying solo over the Atlantic. Just get tattoos and piercings, it's the only socially acceptable form of mutilation.
