The lips are some of the most sensitive parts of your body, so to avail your lips to someone else's lips, and for them to likewise avail their lips to you, is a very "tender" moment, truly, and it is a great point of physical and emotional vulnerability and trust. To have that kind of sensitivity and trust with another human being is a very special moment. It's also a "tender moment" when you kiss someone on the cheeks or forehead or hand, again because your lips are very soft and tender, and can be made harder with a strong "pucker", so you can convey many emotions even by how soft you pose your lips in a kiss or how "puckered" you are. Well, it really depends on the kiss. There is a HUGE difference between a kiss on the cheek, a quick kiss on the lips, a deep meaningful kiss, and a french kiss.
A kiss on the cheek is really just a sign of friendship.
A kiss on the lips tends to signify more, a feeling beyond friendship.
But then you have people who kiss and feel nothing. It is a way to tell if you are attracted to someone.
A kiss is desired because it brings you closer to someone you care for. A first kiss is something desired by nearly all.
Kissing is fun. The best kiss is one that brings you closer to another person. It lets you show the person that you are interested in them.

By kiss on the lips I'm thinking of a passionate kiss. It connects two people into a sense of closeness in a very intimate, personal and sensual way. It is the excitement of a beginning, a first...first kiss, first step...It is reinforces feelings and desires. It's sealed with a kiss.

A kiss signifies the hunger one has to touch that person.It's as if you feel,by touching their lips with your own,you can feel and to some degree taste who they are.The lips being so sensitive,are better than using ones hands at times.

I think a kiss conveys desire, both emotional and physical. In having that kiss returned we feel that we are desired, and that feels pretty good. It is the basic want to be wanted.

it's not for fun.
if you REALLY love someone you'll need to be near him,and touching him.
and lips are so sensitive to touch.
especially if you're ready to feel the least sensation of the touch of your lover.
it's desirable because when you kiss your lover,it feels as if each one of you is hugging the other's lips in between,and it feels as if you are drinking of the honey in between his lips.
and this what makes most people close their eyes while kissing,because they want to FEEL and live this moment in which time stops when each of you get lost in the other,and feel like going to heaven.
that's why people close their eyes,TO ENLARGE their feelings,by closing eyes,which means stopping the sense of sight,to magnify the sense of touch.
that's why it's so desirable.

many people will not like this answer, but really, its primal insticts. In order to survive as a species we must reproduce. In order for that to happen, just like fruit tasting sweet for the birds, we make sex become enjoyable. In conjunction, anything leading to, or having to do with sex is enjoyable. All it is is a failsafe for the human race to continue.
