you look on the belly. if it curves upward its a male as they need the space so as to "fit" on a female during breeding. females will have a flat belly as they are on the bottom.
i guess nature does things so they work.

Male box turtles have red eyes. Females don't. I had a male and a female. Oogie was the male and Olivia was the female. If you get a male and a female they will mate. It takes them hours. Turtles don't do anything slow. We never found any babies though.

Most species males have red eyes and females brown.
