For example, the words are and is are forms of the word to be? Anyone have more suggestions?

Only someone taking an English class would know what I'm talking about. My teacher doesn't want us using words like 'are' and 'is' or 'was' because they aren't active verbs. So my question is, does anyone know words that aren't active verbs?
