Someone told my brother-in-law they only use rotten tomatoes in their septic tank, no chemicals. They apparently have never had to have their tank pumped. Wondering if this actually works...

Tomatoes have a lot of solids in the form of fiber and seeds. Usually tanks need to be pumped when solids build up in them. In addition, "rotten" tomatoes are moldy and I don't think mold is going to dissolve solids in the septic tank and clean it through.

Only thing in tomatoes is acid. This would do more harm than good in a septic. Septics work with bacteria that eat solids. This is why enzyme cleaners work well also. I don't use any chemicals in my septic but I watch what is put into it. I agree with not having a disposal. I also am careful not to use too much bleach when cleaning. Careful usage of a septic system will prolong the chance of needing it pumped. Old adage was "If it didn't go through you, it shouldn't go through the septic". A little overboard but there is some truth to it.

One wonders how they get them into the system....flush them, down the sink or open the pump-out port. YUCK!
No, I can't see this working. Septic system are really not much more than a settling tank. Yes, there's some decomp going on, but really it's the same as a stage one sewage treatment plant where the water and waste separate. Water flows on down into the drainage field and the fiberous stuff that doesn't decompose quickly remains behind to be pumped.
If they haven't pumped their system, I don't want to buy their house. No telling how much of the drainage field is fouled by overflow from the settling tank. There's no shame in pumping the holding tank.......and it's not that expensive.

We just Had our tank pumped for the first time in over twenty years and have never put anything in it. My tank for my other house was there for thirty years and never pumped. maybe we just live right.
I have never heard of rotten tomatoes but, if you get around enough, you'll hear it all, it's what you want to believe.
My Great niece just told me she can cure cancer by rubbing the feet. right!

no idea...but it would really need to be smashed up to be flushed unless you open the lid of your septic tank to get it in there...when our septic tank was put in it has a pump on it..the installer told us never put a garbage disposal in the kitchen and no food down the drain they are the worst for septics aside from tampons..harsh clothes detergents etc. you can buy ridx and put it in your toilet and flush it..it puts good bacteria in your tank to get rid of the waste
