Sweat, metabolic rate, the brain's own thermostat.

To cool the body off it sweats, that's why when you have a fever you often are sweating.

One method the body uses to kill intruding invaders is to try and cook them. If an infection appears and the white cells can't kill it quickly then the body may have a reaction where it elevates its temperature to try and kill the infection. It does this by increasing the metabolic rate and by adjusting the natural body thermostat in the brain. However, it can be dangerous since brain damage can start to set in if the temperature goes above 105 degrees F.

Along with our reflexes the body has a region of the brain that regulates our temperature. When the body gets sick one response, for some illnesses, is to increase the body temperature. Another, and more common response is to create histamine part of the body's natural defense system. However, having a lot of histamine in the body causes our body to produce more mucus; the stuffy nose of a cold or flu.

The exact type of reaction depends on how the body fights the disease. For example cancer rarely causes a change in the body's temperature. Measles is famous for doing it, a cold can, and most often the flu will increase our body temperature. But, measles won't cause as much a histamine reaction as a cold or the flu will.
