I didn't plant them until sometime in July - the plants are huge, the leaves are big as dinner plates, there are buds for flowers, but I was supposed to plant them much earlier in the year.

The plants are growing very quickly and spreading out, but there are no small pumpkins developing yet. I'm wondering if I'll have to go pumpkin shopping for Halloween.

Here's how long it takes for pumpkins to grow to the ripened stage:
Small fruits (1 to 4 pounds, 80 to 100 days to harvest)
Intermediate fruits (6 to 12 pounds, 110 days to harvest)
Large fruits (15 to 40 pounds, 120 days to harvest)
Jumbo fruits (50 to 100+ pounds, 120 days to harvest) are often called Jumbo Pumpkins and include Big Max and various Mammoth varieties.

The smallest pumpkin takes 80 days.

You might get an immature pumpkin in time for Halloween if you planted a pumpkin that is starting to develop now. Try to grow just a few pumpkins on your vine. If you planted a small or medium-sized pumpkin, & it starts developing now, you could still use it for Halloween, but it would not be ripe.
Good luck! Hope this is helpful.

Depending on your zone, you have several scenarios possible. 1) You get lucky as hell and pull it off. 2) You get green unripe pumpkins or fix it with a can of spray paint, I used florescent orange for a real statement. 3) You spray them red and go for the apple look. RScott

you have let you plants put alot of energy into the vines. while it's too late this year, next time, choose a few flowers and cultivate them. take care not to let the plant vine so much.
