Elements consist of only one kind of atom and cannot be decomposed into simpler substances.

mol·e·cule (mŏl'ĭ-kyūl')
n.
The smallest particle of a substance that retains the chemical and physical properties of the substance and is composed of two or more atoms; a group of like or different atoms held together by chemical force.

An atom is a single piece, if divided any further it becomes particles and is no longer an element.

Some elements like to bond with themselves. Pure oxygen forms 02 and when it is exposed to solar radiation it becomes 03 ozone. Carbon is the most flexible. It forms a benzine ring of 6 carbon atoms, which is the basis for all organic chemistry, and it can be burned at very high temperatures to form "Bucky balls" which are spheres of pure carbon. Then the carbon can be setup in a huge complex forming a circular tube; like a straw. These are carbon nanotubes.

There are chemical substances and elements. Elements are fundamental elements while everything else is formed out of a combination of elements like H20= water. Those chemicals are molecules as well. HOWEVER, they are combinations or groups of elements not two or more of the same elements bonded together.

An atom is the smallest possible thing that can still be an element.
eg an atom of O is oxygen.

avogadro's number of atoms weighs the atomic weight of an element. eg 6.023E23 Oxygen atoms weigh 16 grams.

note that oxygen is highly reactive and does not exist in the elemental state. it is bound into oxides and carbonates and silicates (in the rock and soil) and into oxygen gas and carbon dioxide and water molecules (in the air and water).

A molecule is simply an arrangement of atoms that are bound together.
eg a molecule of O2 is the oxygen gas that we breathe.
a molecule of CH3CH20H is the alcohol that we drink
