As a long time rugby player, having watch American football for almost 20 years, I have seen high tackles every week.

It normally results from the tackler getting his feet under him & hitting horizontally. As a rugby player, I would have my feet set back slightly, learning forward. I would bring my feet forward later in the tackle to drive up & through the opponent, putting them flat on their back, with my forearm on their chest or across their throat. But of course, this is partly because rugby players don't wear pads & helmets & that makes a big difference - real men don't wear pads.

I played prop, which would be a little like a DE or OLB. But I was way undersized. I was always tackling someone (at least) 50% heavier than me. My technique worked just fine.
