You will get some kind of settlement out of it most likely, just recently a man who was in jail was released after 20 years and was found out to be innocent

The state paid him around 20k for every year he spent in prison
so he got a nice check out of it.

What happens? They let you out. That's it.

You may be able to sue the state and get a monetary settlement, if you can prove that the criminal justice system was somehow negligent in its duty, but this is by no means automatic. If the government dotted all its "I's" and crossed all its "T's" when they sent you to prison, a jury found you guilty, and you later turned out to be innocent, by no fault of anybody's, then you get: an apology, a new suit, and that's it.

We take certain chances by living in a civilization. The chance that we may get run over by a bus; the chance that we may be accidentally electrecuted; and the chance that we may be accidentally found guilty of a crime. These risks exist. But, because we believe that the advantages of living in a society with busses, electricity, and a criminal justice system outweigh the disadvantages, we choose to take that small risk.

You are just in jail for 40 years. All they can do is say we're sorry.

Assuming you’re talking about someone who served time and was later *found by the court to be innocent*…

In the US, many states--although I don’t think it’s all states--do have legislation in place to provide compensation to those who have been wrongfully convicted.

Basically your life is ruined and no-one will care about your innocence.Best thing to do is move to another country and start a new life.

Absolutely nothing. The state does not have to pay you anything, or even help you Reintegrate in to the mainstream population. However, you might get a book deal or movie deal out of it!
