A meter is a unit of measure like 1 yard.
A decimeter is 1/10th a meter = 0.1 meters
A centimeter is 1/100th a meter = 0.01 meters
A milimeter is 1/1000th a meter = 0.001 meters.
Each unit is 1/0th the higher unit or ten times the lower unit.
Go to this part of the article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SI_Units#Units to see the chart.
A gigabyte = 1 billion bytes of data
A megabyte = 1 million bytes of data
A kilobyte = 1 thousand bytes of data
never used measurements, but still valid units are:
A hectobyte =1 hundred bytes of data
A decobyte = ten bytes of data.
Do you see the pattern? It is all a factor of 10 either up or down, that is how the metric system works using standard units.

Ok let me put this way, 100 centimeter = 10 decimeter = 1 meter.
So you got it now. Divide cm by 10 to get a decimeter and further divide it by 10 to reach the meter.

Suppose X cm. To convert this into 'dm' multiply X by d/d. Since d/d = 1, the value remains the same.
Now X becomes X c* [d/d] m. We want the final result to be dm.
Write the above equation as X [c/d] dm.
Hence it is suffice, if we find the value of [c/d.]
c means 'centi' = 1/100 and d means 'deci' =1/10.
Hence [c/d] = 1/100 * 10/1 = 1/10.
The final answer is X [1/10] dm.
By practice, we arrive to the result quickly.
The method can be used for any conversion of units'
56 cm = 56 [1/10] d m.
You can check the result by finding the value of [1/10] d
[1/10] d = [1/10] 1/10 = 1/100 = c
56 [1/10] d m = 56 cm.
==============================================
To convert decimeter into meter or 'dm' to m replace 'd ' by its value [1/10].
34dm = 34 [1/10] m
