Given, of course, that it is not accompanied by gun wielding or ranting and raving, or expressed by someone with a history of violence. Do people really believe it to be a significant threat, especially if followed by a reasonable plea for assistance in a minor matter at work? How can it be punishable if no harm or threat of harm was intended, if it was only a poor choice of words?

I can tell by the way you are talking, that you've said this recently and you were punished for it. I would say that you have to be careful what you say around your employer or co-workers. Yes, some may see it as petty and unimportant, or an exaggeraration of stress. Many people believe things are "unpunishable" but they are. You have to respect authority, not only because it's right, but because they can do what they want to you. It's a roundabout way of saying it but, Life's not fair, know what you are saying before you say it.
