Where I'm at, the UPS or FEDEX will just drop a package on your steps whether your home or not, UPS has even walked up to my fence and just dropped the package into my yard. I called them and they just said, "well, it wasn't marked fragile". I recommend you have nothing to do with these companies!

you might also look into the Hold at location service
both service offer this, this means they will hold your package
at a certain location (for Fedex that would one of their shipping centers or Fedex kinkos then your package would be safe
and you can pick it up later

I love my Ups and Fedex men. They come to my door and I live in an apartment. They even took the time to ask what I want to do about packages when I am not home. Perhaps you should try being nice and talking with them if you get packages often. I get 3 or 4 packages a week and made a point to foster a good relationship with them which even included some home baked goodies. And I have gotten one package in 6 years that had a broken item in it and I didn't moan about it. That is what the insurance is for, life
happens.

I won't use FedEx or Airborne, but haven't had trouble with UPS at all here. They put boxes inside the door or out of sight from the road behind the porch step for us. And deliveries that I've made through them all got to their destination ok.
