I must admit that I prefer bourbon to cognac and steak to pate, but I take umbrage at your assertion. Indiana is a state that has all kinds of people, but none of them are ashamed of who they are. Other states have their share of the stupid and closeminded. But, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Indiana actually falls slightly below what one would presume for hate group frequency, based on state population. Nothing to brag about, but we're not at the top end of the problem.

I would suggest that you either are merely pontificating from a position of your own bigotry and ignorance or you sought out the more loutish of my fellow Hoosiers. Unlike many other locations, our more sophisticated citizens likewise pride themselves upon their decorum and quiet manners. Thus, our worst are also, unfortunately, our loudest. Of course, given that your other questions give your residency as California, I would say that you are merely indulging in bigotry from a distance. This is, I'm afraid, all too typical of Californians of my acquaintance. I routinely encounter Californians who are astonished when they actually come to Indiana and discover that it does not live up to their prejudices.

You might be interested to know that, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, California has a larger proportion of hate groups per capita than does Indiana. Before you pick at the mote in my eye, perhaps you might wish to remove the beam in your own.

As for other bigots who have posted on this question, Indiana is not the originating state for the Ku Klux Klan. That stain belongs to Tennessee, and its revival occurred originally in Georgia (with some favorable statements by Woodrow Wilson, of all people, to spur them on). There was a short and dishonorable period in Indiana history during the 1920s wherein the Klan did have some level of political dominance (also in Oklahoma and Oregon, but they cover it up better), but that soon collapsed. However, the current black heart of the Klan is in the old Confederate states, and they're welcome to it.

But I digress. Here in Indiana we have all kinds, good and bad. If we have a fatal flaw it is that we simply aren't as good as sweeping our bad under the rug. Perhaps it is part of our traditional Hoosier outspokenness.

FOR ONE pennsylvania isnt ALL FILLED with stupid hicks . I live here and its a very eclectic mix of people. The majority of our towns are average middle class towns. ''Not Hicks'', then we have small dotted areas with ''hicks'' and then big cities with lots of blacks and urban area. Also some suburbs. and two obama is ahead in indiana at the moment. If theyre smart they will vote Hillary. Also Pennsylvanians always liked bill and hillary and MAINLY VOTE LIBERAL for every single election so we are not a RED STATE. WE ARE LIBERAL BLUE. You can go from the inner city of philadelphia ''most urban you can get'' to lancaster ''back to the 1700s'' in about an hour or two then go to middle class america and then some rich areas in a matter of minutes/hours. Very eclectic.

You really don't know a person till ya meet them, but I guess some things aren't as developed in the south and it's more spread out some places, so you get that impression sometimes, but not all people from Indiana are stupid, racist, or close minded. I gotta couple of friends who live and are from there fighting for gay rights or support things that closed minded people would be against.

It's stupid and ignorant to think that all people from one state are the same. No I'm not from Indiana, I just think you're a moron. It's the same way that racists think but you're a statist.

did you play "pin the generalization on a state" this morning?... i think you did... blind folded, spun around 10 times and had to just throw your hand on a random state on the map to insult.

there are people like you are describing in every state... For example, i wouldn't just pin point IGNORANCE on whatever state you live in just because you reside there. by the way, calling the people of an entire state stupid shows your maturity level too...
way to go*

Do you know everyone in the whole state of Indiana? That is called generalizing and being prejudice.

Eep - guess I'd better read up on hicks...errrr no, that wouldn't fit with stupid, would it? (:

Let's see...I'm pro-choice for everyone but me (pro-life for me), have definite political and religious stands but DON'T push them on anyone else, am about as anti-racist as a human gets, and have lived in 6 states, visited over 30 of 'em as well as Canada and Mexico...oh yeah, and I live in INDIANA!!

But feel free to make up your own mind, of course. (:
