I don't like that word at all, when it's used to describe a person. It sounds like animal or thing

I definitely get what you're saying, because the word "exotic" CAN be used as a form of condescension or as a polite way of saying, "you don't fit in" or "you're weird". Or it can make you feel like a China doll or a zoo animal, a display items that others feel free to comment about.
But it can also mean, "Wow, I wish I stood out and had your great features! You're lucky!"
Try not to listen only to the individual words, but also to the context and the attitude behind them.
And above appreciate your own beauty and distinctiveness and try not to put too much stock into whatever comments others may make.

When people say this it usually means you look like you come from an exotic country. Your features are usually mixed and you don't quite look like one race. I use to get told this when I was younger and that's what I understood it to be because the next question would be, Where are you from? People say I stand out in a crowd and consider me very good looking so it is not an insult. You may not like the term because you rather blend in the crowd.

Personally I like the word and feel it's a positive way to describe a person, place or thing. In some cases it can have a sexual overtone so I would avoid it in that context. That said, I can understand why it can be abrasive to you, especially if it makes you feel "different" but I think if a guy says that to you, that's a pretty good indication that they like the way you look. Next time smile and say thanks and see what happens.

isn't better to be someone different than all the rest ?
people find your features different and unqiue (in a good way) and dont know the next best word other than "exotic".
your probably captivating and they just want to give you a nice complement.
calm down and relize when someone means good.

It means they think you're pretty. You are very probably a remarkably beautiful young woman.
Its a shame you seem to see an insult in an innocent remark.
