Invented in the 1930s. Did not become a presence in American homes until after World War Two because the audio system for TV (FM radio) was needed for military radios during that war.

Basically in the 1930's. I remember having one in the house when I was 4 in 1952. Big square box with a 12 inch screen with a magnifying glass over the screen to make it look bigger. We only go two channels.
