A rediculous price for a laptop with 512 mb of ram and a 13.3" screen...and thats just the start of the downwards spiral. What would posess someone to buy a macbook over say an acer for instance ?
I look forward to hearing reasons for this!

Good point Peace. But ideally i believe that the world should follow alienware PC's. The alienware notebooks put macbooks to their death! And they contain serious hardware!
I agree that they are a fashion symbol but people do not realise they re less vulnerable to viruses...it's just a good thing they are otherwise they would be useless :p

What people fail to understand is that the main difference between MAC and PC is simply this.

With a PC, a component failure is easily repaired by the owner, no real tech stuff, simple plug n go.

With a MAC you HAVE to take it to a MAC Dealer who then charges you a stupid fee for swapping out a component that is over priced compared to PC.

I went and priced up a MAC and asked about upgrades and got funny looks, it turns out that you go and buy a MAC system that has everything you need in it upfront with no option to upgrade other than plug in external stuff via the firewire ports. The only real thing that you can upgrade is the RAM.

PC you can find pretty much what you like and install it into your box, you also have a choice of operating systems that you can stuff your box with unlike MAC.

Ever seen a MAC running Linux? You wont.

If it was up to me, I would go for flexibility over fixed architecture regardless of whether or not theirs a virus issue because viruses can be dealt with easy enough and MACs do have virus threats and yes MAC update the OS but they don't call them fixes.

HERE: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Apple-Issues-New-Security-Patches-For-Mac-OS-X-10-4-Tiger-6456.shtml
QUOTE: "Apple released the latest security updates for the last two editions of Mac OS X, Panther and Tiger. The updates are patching more than 40 vulnerabilities, a new record for the Cupertino computer maker.
Apple updated a long list of components and technologies
within Mac OS X, ranging from the Safari Web browser to the short-range wireless Bluetooth.

Included among the patches are repairs to AppKit which prevent malicious users exploiting buffer overflows with
carefully crafted .rtf and .doc files, executing malware stored within those files or allowing the coder to add extra user accounts to the system."

So are MAC's more secure and less vulnerable? I think not.

I'm a Mac user and highly recommend both. The MacBook Pro is pretty much a faster computer so I would go with the MacBook Pro if you are doing audio and video editing. The Pro also has Firewire and built-in SD slot. If you can afford the difference, go with the Pro. I've never regretted spending more on a better computer.

While i do not know the base price for an acer, the nase price for a macbook is $1099 and for that price you get 1gb ram(standard on all macbooks) 80gb HD, built-in web camera, 2.0ghz core 2 duo processor, wireless n airport card, bluetooth, dvd player/cd-rw, 6hr battery life, weighs 5.2lbs, and of course mac os x.

For some mac osx is worth the price of the computer and all macs come with ilife which is a software bundle which includes imovie(for editing and making your own videos) garageband9for editing and mixing your own music) iphoto(photo organization), idvd(for burning dvds) and iweb(for creating your own websites). However this is just a matter of choice. Just like some people also want a computer that doesn't weigh a ton and the screen size is just perfect for them.

As for me, a current macbook owner(9 moths and counting), it was a combination of all these things. I needed a computer that i could carry around with me on campus without feeling like my back was about to break, unlike my old 8lb compaq computer. I also wanted a computer with decent specs and I wanted mac os x.While many people on here are saying that the reason people buy macbooks is for looks, it's not true for everyone. Because in a year or two depending on how much abuse i put this computer through the looks won't be important, and what will matter is if the computer still works like it's supposed to, does what I need it to do and for me macbook will do just that.

The only reason I've ever heard for this was that they are less vulnerable to viruses because most viruses are made for PCs. Other than that, it's a status thing. If you pay attention to those things in movies and on TV, you'll see Macs all over the place. Apple managed to spin the popularity of the iPod into a brand empire (to the tune of several million dollars in advertising alone). Now, all the stars have Macs, so, logically, the rest of the world should, too. Makes tons of sense, right?

UPDATE: As for the size issue, while in the rest of the world it's more about "mine's bigger"... in the world of electronics, it seems to be more about "mine's smaller". ;-)

i guess cuz vista has a lot of bugs right now. although xp is in ok os for me. i think that macbooks look stylish and all but just not for me. i also hear it is harder to hack into an apple computer, don't have any evidence for that though.

The only reason I would buy one is for the software bundled in with it. The graphics software is better than Windows.
