I am in organic chemistry and we are learning about SP hybridization. I thought I understood it but my professor is talking about different bonds. ie. sigma and pi bonds...

So, can anyone help me understand SP hybridization and how to know when something is SP or SP2 or SP3 hybridized.

thanks...

Look at the number of bonds to other atoms that each C atom needs to form. If it's 4 - sp3. If it's 3 - sp2. If just 2 - sp.
