ISBN numbers were first used in 1966 in Great Britain and about 8 years later they became used here in America. Therefore, later editions of the book have numbers but the original 1964 edition does not. Pax- C

An ISBN is a book-identifier number, first developed in Great Britain. See:
The International Standard Book Number, ISBN, is a unique[1] commercial book identifier barcode. The ISBN system was created in the United Kingdom, in 1966, by the booksellers and stationers W.H. Smith. Originally, it was the 9-digit Standard Book Numbering (SBN) code and still was used in 1974; it was adopted as the international standard ISO 2108 in 1970. A similar, numeric identifier, the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), identifies periodical publications such as magazines. Since January 1, 2007, ISBNs are of 13 digits, like in Bookland EAN-13.[2] The TC 46/SC 9 is responsible for the standard.

The ISBN is the "International Standard Book Number." It's the number that most often appears over a barcode on a book's cover or dustcover. It is used by booksellers and publishers to identify and track books and either has recently changed or is in the process of changing to more digits.

ISBNs do cost money, traditional publishers pay for them for authors, while self-publishers can buy their own. Many bookstores will not carry books without ISBNs.

Hope that helps!
