There is a marketing/business term for this which is called cognitive disodence. Basically, it is when one rationalizes a purchase in order to justify it. i.e. you bought a Mercedes because all of your friends will be jealous.
As to why you would purchase something and later try to justify the purchase are phycological. It is important to remember that a successful marketing scheme-such as a sale, etc.- will have phycological triggers to encourage spending money. One such reason would be:
1) indulging your ability to buy without thought (impulse buying). This, to a person, encourages the feelings of power and wealth.
There are multiple other reasons but this should begin to answer you question.

I usually buy things at a thrift store believing they were too good of a deal to pass up and that I'll use it eventually if the other one breaks down like a used microwave oven. I now have three microwave ovens. Than there's the old cameras I keep buying also. The batteries cost more than the camera. At least I finally stopped going to the casino bank making those deposits there without getting the withdrawals.

Whether they are offered at discount or not,
I buy certain things if I like them. First I will check
if I can use them personally. If not, I will give them
as gifts to my friends.
