I have a '83 KZ750 motorcycle. I just discovered today that the wire brush on my dremel can polish the engine block; it actually makes the engine block bright and shiny. Is this a bad idea? Will my engine block rust? Am I removing some protective coating? What's the engine block made of, anyway?

It looks pretty good, btw.

The engine block of almost ALL modern bikes are made of an aluminum alloy. Aluminum doesn't rust, but rather oxidizes.
I know the side covers are coated, but I don't believe the engine case is. If so, no damage would be done by polishing the case.

That last guy was correct. Rust is oxidized iron. Steel contains iron, which is why it rusts. Aluminum and aluminum alloys (usually magnesium mixed in with it) does not contain iron and will not rust. When aluminum oxidizes it just gets a little cloudy. I've never heard of a protective coating on an engine block so you should be safe. If your block needed polishing anyway, than it was probably oxidized. Shine on!

The side covers are coated with a clear coat - not sure about the engine block.
Worst case scenario, you'll just have to keep polishing.
Use a good quality wax, even chrome polish will protect the aluminum.

Your motorcycle is so old that the protective coating on the engine is probably already gone anyway, if it had one in the first place.
