My girlfriend tells me to make a right to get onto the highway and I crossed 3 lanes and just as i was about to make a right my gf says theres no turn on red ( I live in long island..you can turn in certain cases on red). I hit the break hard enough for me to stop. All of a sudden i hear a car screatch behind me. It was a cop!! Got scared since i thought it was going to hit me. I moved up just a bit cause of the fear especially after seeing the cop lights. The cop tells me that my car lights were off(main reason why i think the cop was chasing me). He tells me to get out of the car to see if i was drinking. I didnt worry about that after that he left me go back to my car. Few min later he gives me a ticket for turning on red where prohibited. I didnt know what to do so i didnt say anything. I know i stopped on time and my gf agrees too! what should i do? go to court and get a free lawyer to explain my situation? Im afraid hes going to win just cause he is a cop.

They didnt stop me since i wasnt doing anything bad. I was soo paranoid after the ticket... I think the cops were trying to get people that were drinking and driving. Labor day weekend you know?

You can take it to court. In a traffic court, you pretty much have to defend yourself unless it is serious stuff. Turning against a light is not all that serious. Explain it the way you did here, but remember that you have to stop before turning righht on a red light even where it is allowed, so you probably looked like you were about to proceed through a redlight when you noticed the cop behind you. Your explanation should leave out the part about not having your lights on He won't win jusy because he is a cop. The judge will weigh all the facts and make a decision be=ased on what is most believeable.

you should go to court and fight that ticket because for one,the cops had no reason lying to you, two, they had no reason following you,and you stopped before you turned so technically you did not turn on that red light. You should not be afraid to go to court and fight that ticket. They want you to feel intimitated so don't give them the feeling of satisfaction, look them straght in the eye and talk with a low, level tone and tell the judge what happened and no matter what happens don't change your story. That will make the judge think that you are lying so before you go in the court room have everything planned out in your head just what you are going to say so you don't forget anything. And one more thing.Good Luck!

Well you have 2 choices, pay the ticket or fight it. But no you can not get a "free lawyer" for traffic court. You go in and explain your side to the judge and he decides. Where I live 85% of tickets issued and fought are dismissed because the cop that issued the ticket never shows up in court. Mine was.

i would say suck it up and go to court. The cop may not show and then the ticket will get dismissed. Why didn't you just go up the road a little further to make a legal turn to go where it is you needed to. Crossing 3 lanes to make an exit is a reckless thing to do.
