It's a Toshiba Satellite 2800-S202.

I just got it and I use it on my carpet.

When I lift it up and feel the bottom, it feels pretty warm.

The fan run occasionally (I guess only when it needs to cool off).

Is this condidered normal?

they are stationary and don't have legs.
They do, however, operate on the warmer side, yes.
do NOT operate it on carpet, or a towel, or the like. Have it on a hard surface so the fan can blow the air away from the laptop and dissapate the heat that it generates. Trust me on THAT.

Yes, our Toshiba Satellites run warm because the CPU and memory chips create heat. So does the Hard Drive motor.
The carpet does not let the heat escape from the bottom of the Toshiba Satellite. It acts as insulation retaining the heat. That heat can cause your Toshiba Satellite to fail sooner and when the CPU gets to a certain temperature, it slows down to reduce the amount of heat it produces.
My opinion is the fan does not come on soon enough. I know it has at least too speeds as I can hear when it really gets faster than normal.
I use a cookie rack under mine to let the air underneath.

I encourage you to have something under your Toshiba Satellite to get it off the carpet.

It is normal for laptops to get warm on the bottom. The battery is on the bottom and batteries always get warm. Have you ever noticed how your cell phone battery gets warm when you hold it in your hand as you talk?

You just need to give it a way to cool. Laptops are not meant to be used on surfaces like carpet or a bed. They often have feet to prop them up and allow air to circulate underneath. Even if they don't have feet, the little rubber feet at all four corners are meant to provide a little bit of space between the bottom and the surface they sit on so some circulation of air can take place. When you sit them on a soft surface like carpet, all of the air gaps are filled up and the heat gets trapped in causing the battery to build up heat. This can damage the hardware and you might even call it a fire hazard, though fire is an extreme case. Electronics don't like heat so try to protect your investment by letting it keep cool.

yes they tend to run warm especially when their bottom side ports are being ubstructed eg. on a carpet or a bed-quilt.

Best thing to do is keep it raised - rest it on top of a book if you are using it in bed for instance.

a laptop will usually tolerate internal running temperature of around 60^C and will cool when a) the cpu is running at a high percentage b) the sensors detect excess heat c) the airflow is no longer obstructed - because the fans could be trying to move but without an exit the airflow blockage is physically preventing your fan from spinning.

check the manual that came with your laptop it should include statistics for what altitudes temperatures and humidities it can tolerate.

I would suggest not putting it on the carpet because your trapping the air flow and it is heating up. There is an intercooler that u can get for about 20 dollars that helps cool it down. You need to have something that allows for more airflow into the laptop like a flat surface and maybe something small to prop it up but not blocking the airways..

sure, that's customary. Your computing gadget gets heat by way of fact electrical energy is working by way of wires and circuits and creates warmth. The fan blows the warm air out and thank you to warmth conduction, the fabric close to the fan gets a sprint warmer. if your computing gadget gets too warm to run desirable, you will get the Blue demonstrate and it will immediately close down and warn you of the project later. in case you may BURN your self, that is probable too warm as properly. although that is customary for laptops to get warmer than computing gadget computing gadget by way of fact the areas are closer at the same time. do no longer apply it to pillows, blankets or different suffocating aspects and it is going to likely be fantastic. desire this helped. :-)

Oh my, do not use it on anything but a hard surface, and it is a good idea to get a fan for underneath it. I have a fan and it runs off the usb port.

I use a laptop tray when ever I use my laptop, and if I travel, I have a sturdy, cutting board that fits in the laptop case.

Make sure it is not a bendable cutting board.

If you want to ruin a laptop quickly, then do not have a hard surface underneath.

For the most part, laptops run pretty warm. However, insulation such as carpet, bed, or couch can cause your laptop to get hotter. It could damage your laptop. Try using it on a table or hard floor.

Yes, definitely normal. The processors are just so powerful these days that they pretty much run warm all the time, and pretty hot sometimes too!

Carpet is usually not a good place to lay a running laptop because the air can't circulate as well. Stick it on a smooth, flat surface for best circulation.
