Well, I think what you guys could have done is broken that down into "best movies for each genre, of the 90s" Because each genre, whether it be comedy, horror, romance, documentary, etc, had groundbreaking flicks that really defined the genre, or at least popular movies that brought the genre back into the limelight.
PulpFiction was definitely a gem, both critically and publically acclaimed, and it pretty much established John Travolta as being still relevant, as well as defined Tarantino as a master filmmaker, (though I find him creepy).
2) Shawshank, yes, but at the same time, it didn't do anything to define or stand out as a star in it's genre , or offer anything new to the table, just another jail-themed movie, with an interesting plot, nothing spectacular. BEST movie of the 90s? I don't know. Good movie? Hell yes.
3) LA confidential? Well, fiction or not, showed a realistic spin on what exactly goes on in that sin-hellhole of a town. Good flick, again, too similar to PulpFiction or Shawshank Redemption, in the genre.
Something different would work here as well.
4)Goodfellas? eh. Soprano territory.
5) Fight club? lol.
Honestly, I think THIS LIST is far from being the best movies of the 90s.
What it is, honestly, is a list of movies you guys enjoyed the most, and now think that just because you guys loved them the best, they have to somehow be the best movies of the decade.
Not insulting, but that's just how I see it.
I guess that blew my chance at best answer.
Oh well, lol.
Those movies were great, but I also think other genres deserved a say.
For example, Scream and Titanic were far from being the best movies of the 90s, but should have been mentioned if nothing else, but for having a variety.
Scream brought back the horror genre, spawned sequels and other copycat flicks for years to come, including parody films.
Titanic just brought in an insane amount of money, and was nominated for 1000000 academy awards, and everyone knows it, so it should be on the list by default.
THere were many others.
Your list is good, but more of a personal favorite.
