Anything relating to MTV and the first music videos. That changed the music industry forever.
There are tons of 80's songs, bands and looks to choose from. Looking back on it, the hair, makeup and clothes of the decade is actually pretty funny- yet very cool. I miss the 80's....some of my best memories. Teachers in their thirties and forties will love it.
These were some of the most popular songs of the decade:

Something 3-D! I grew up in that time, and that is when 3-D was really big, like in the movies and everyone wore 3-D glasses! A 3-D platform would actually look cool if you get creative enough with it! You can use all different themes from the 80's and make the props 3-D. Hope this helps with your idea . . . Good luck!

The float I built for the Class of 1984 was a 8 foot tall boom-box... the old style with a cassette player in Coca-Cola Red.
It sat on the back of a flatbed truck, the "speakers" held real concert speakers inside. They were theater flats (1x3 wood frame with canvas cover attached to a 2x4 frame supporting a 4x8 sheet of plywood so students could stand / dance on top.
USE the MTV theme...
Good Luck
