I agree you should read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the movie was horrible but the book is absolutely one of the most hilarious works of sci-fi. I also think you would enjoy The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. I am currently working on my Masters degree in English Literature and i understand the need to read for pleasure. I love Stephen King, but can understand if you do not want to read horror. I will tell you my secret, I will occasionally read romance. I know, it's horrible. Don't tell anyone. Any of Judith McNaught's novels are really well written. I also recently read a book called The Poison Wood Bible, it is very sad but gives a unique look at Africa in the fifties. I could go on forever, but I won't. Hope this is helpful.

Poetry:

Blake is my favorite, "Songs of Innocence" "Songs of Experience".

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Catcher in the Rye, Salinger
Brave New World, Huxley
Into the Wild, Krakauer
Cat's Cradle /or/ Slaughterhouse-5, Vonnegut
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Adams (great sci fi - the best!)

I love all of these books in high school.

For poetry I would definitely suggest Billy Collins. He was the poet laureate for the US in 2001-2003. His poems have humor and beauty. Really great stuff!

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
So Yesterday by Scott Westerfeld

I agree with the poster who suggested Catcher in the Rye. I would also suggest anything else by J.D. Salinger.
I think you would also enjoy anything by Kurt Vonnegut. He had a really original take on the human race.
Tony Hillerman has a series of books which take place in Arizona. They are mysteries which are solved by two Native American detectives.
I also love the mysteries written by Agatha Christie.
One final thought - have you read The Autobiography of Malcom X?
