So far we've seen no verifiable evidence of other sentient species. That said, I believe with some certainty that somewhere in our galaxy at some past, present, or future time, a sentient species did/does/will exist.

Why haven't we heard from them?

Perhaps they are not technologically advanced enough to be heard. They may be mastering stone knives right now, or experiencing their own Rennaisance.

Perhaps they are here right now. Any species sufficiently advanced to travel interstellar distances would be able to hide or masquerade with ease. That Boeing 737 that just flew by may be a surveillance craft.

Perhaps they are so far away they will never notice us and vice versa.

Perhaps they existed a million years ago and died out.

Perhaps they will exist a million years from now.

It is really impossible to know for sure.

The Drake Equation suggests that there is sentient life out there. The Fermi Paradox casts doubt. Play around with the calculation form at the second link and see what you think.

Without a doubt. cbirch92 is under-calculating - galaxies range in size from ten million to one trillion stars, and there are over a hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe. It took a while to find a calculator which could actually process that large a number, but it works out to 10 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 stars in the universe. (That's a one followed by twenty-two zeroes.)

So the likelyhood that Earth is the ONLY planet that's managed to produce intelligent life is, quite frankly, mind-boggling. Even in this galaxy, the Milky Way, which has a mere two hundred to four hundred billion stars, there are probably planets TEEMING with life - we just don't have the technology to detect them. Yet.

Oh, and metsfan666, Titan orbits Saturn, not Jupiter. Other likely candidates for life in the Sol system are Enceladus, also around Saturn, and Europa, around Jupiter. Mars probably had past life. Europa's the most likely candidate - come on, NASA, send on a mission!

Typo...

lifefroms = incorrect
life forms = correct

At this time there are many highly trained people searching the Universe for planets which are Earthlike in situation and composition. They have discovered more than 259 other planets in recent months now that they have developed the techniques to locate them. At least one has been found to have water on it, which is a necessary part of meeting the Earthlike composition requirements that we assume are needed for life (as we know it ) to exist.

Consider for a moment that when we look into the night sky we see the various stars all about us. We do not see the planets orbiting those stars because planets do not emit light themselves. They only reflect it, and that is the only way we can see objects such as Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus which are within our Solar System.

The various stars that we see are extremely bright, like our Sun, and blind us to the objects which might be orbiting them (their various planets and moons). So, while we always talk of the planets we know about in our Solar System, in fact, there are billions of planets and other moons out there.

There are literally millions and millions of possible places where life might exist, but less than that where life might probably exist. The search for those places goes on as we speak to one another.

no one can be 100% sure, but its almost certain

there are about 50 billion known galaxies and each of them with a billion stars. thats 50,000,000,000,000,000,000 (50 quintillion) stars. now lets assume each star has an average of 5 planets. thats 250 quintillion planets. now lets assume they each have an average of 4 moons (even in our solar system theres a larger average than that, so thats underestimating). thats 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 moons (1 sextillion) so how many chances for life is that? 1,250,000,000,000,000,000,000 chances for life somewhere in the universe.

so the chance of us being the only life forms in the universe is:

1/1,250,000,000,000,000,000,000. (there should be 18 0's yahoo didnt let me do it).those are pretty good odds that its somewhere else out there.

and by the way, i didnt even count asteriods and comets which could contain microscopic life. there are probably septillions (just so you know, a septillion has so many 0's that yahoo started to replace them with "...") of asteriods and comets.

Im not talking about unidentified objects like kite or etc. Im reffering to UFO's from other planets of another galaxy/civilization that are capable of travelling here on earth using technology that is way more advance that we could imagine.

The bible didnt mention if there's life out there or none because the Bible is mostly about our relationship with each other and with our faith with God..So theres a gazillion possibility that theres life out there, hence the planets in the universe are more than the grains of sand here on earth.

Actually, I call them IFO's now. [alien space-craft] because they are now identified and some of them had crashed on earth and they had been here around 1940's since they were 1st spotted but government & military coverup is still present claiming UFOs as to be weather ballons or etc.

NOW THATS STUPID. do you think the government can just deny it easily and tell the public that nothing is up there? with millions of people that actually saw it, took pictures and etc?..

WE ARE NOT STUPID.

And yea, dont forget Feb 24,1942. Remember the 1942 los-angeles attack?.. military officials fired at UFO's, it was like a bunch of UFOs . The military claimed it to be UFO's at first. then the next day, it was published in the newspaper that it was a weather ballon.???.Over 1400 rounds of shell cant drop that weather ballon.FTW.. get outta here.:)

forget about cover-ups!
