If this is your first year of band I recommend you rent your clrinet for your first year.If you decide to continue to play next year, buy one.
I think Yamaha is the best brand.I bought mine at St.John's music for a few hundred bucks.

My rosewood wasn't too bad - $3200
Good student models can be had for a couple hundred - professional models are much more.
Renting is safer - it costs more in the long run though. The advantage to renting is that if you change your mind, you're not out hundreds of dollars. If it breaks, you have someplace to take it. If you want to upgrade, you don't have to sell another first.
The disadvantage is that you pay all that money and then you don't own it. A clarinet can have a very very long life. I have one I truly love playing that is well over 50 years old.
Stay clear of department store instruments and if you buy a used one, expect to immediately spend about $100 on a service call. Keep in mind, you can buy a really nice quality used instrument for about the same price as a poor quality new one.

You can find them used in the newspaper classifieds from $75-100, usually. Bundy is a common beginning clarinet brand. I've seen them for sale new at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club, too...
I wouldn't rent an instrument that is so inexpensive.
Check on http://www.craigslist.org and type in 'clarinet' -- in my town there are several listed starting at $50.

DO NOT buy from Sam's Club, Wal Mart, or any other dept. store. Read my answer to your other question. If you're getting a clarinet teacher, ask him/her for advice.
